5 Most Common Lies Business Owners Tell
I work with some incredible business owners. I am not kidding, these people are doing crazy awesome stuff. But just because people are crazy awesome doesn’t mean they aren't liars. They may be incredible humans who are doing wonderful things, but they lie to themselves all day every day.
These are the most common lies that I hear from business owners who I have the privilege of working with as a coach.
Lie #1: I need to do it all myself if I want it done right.
Ha!! This one is one of my favorites. It is a way we keep the feeling of control by doing everything ourselves all the time. Guess what. Not only will you sincerely stunt your growth by trying to do everything yourself, you could also be missing out on working with people who are amazing. Let me say this loud so you can hear it, LET PEOPLE HELP YOU! They may not do it exactly how you do it, but that could very well be a good thing.
Lie #2: I don’t have what I need to do what I want.
You are resourceful. You wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t. You know how to find a way to do what you want to do if you really want to do it. Things might take longer than you plan, and the resources might come from a different place than you thought they would, but if you really really really really want to make something happen, you are going to make it happen.
Lie #3: Someone else is probably doing it better than me.
This one is actually true, but not in the way you think. There are plenty of people doing things “better” than you, but that doesn’t actually matter. In business, people work with people they like and “better” is completely subjective. I see it over and over again, especially in the creative world. People don’t hire the “best” photographer. They hire the photographer that they know, like, trust, and that jives with their style and budget and availability. Be your best and business will follow.
Lie #4: It’s not this hard for anyone else.
This could not be further from the truth!! Being in business is hard for EVERYONE. Literally, everyone. If it wasn’t hard, people wouldn’t do it. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but it’s true. If business was easy, it would be boring. I am not into boring things and neither are you. A problem to solve, a challenge to overcome, let’s enjoy that a little, ok?
Lie #5: If I just do (fill in the blank), it will all get easier.
Whether that blank is hire someone, get some great press, land a big client, get some quick cash flow, these are all lies. There is no secret quick fix to success. There is not a singular thing you can do to flip the switch and have everything become gravy. Success in business (and in life) comes from a combination of actions that compound over time. You have to work at it and the work never ends. More money, more problems, as they say. It doesn’t get easier, you get stronger. (I know that is a gross fitness meme, but it is actually true.) You get more resilient as you learn more and try and fail and try and succeed. Don’t expect a quick fix or a simple solution. It doesn’t’ exist.
